Thomas contacted us to assist him in filming a product review for his popular youtube vlog. As a celebrated landscape and adventure photographer, Thomas has built up an enormous online following through his channel, which invites viewers to follow him into the British wilderness, on a hunt for the perfect photograph. In response to the popularity of his channel, he now has brands and destinations vying to work with him, including the client for this project, Manfrotto. Given his reputation as the Bear Grylls of photography, we were both eager, and just a touch apprehensive to find out what Thomas had in store for us.
As the backdrop for his gruelling product testing Thomas wanted to climb two mountains in the Lake District (Blencathra and Stickle Tarn), then head over to Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland for the final scenes, all in one day. Thomas wanted us to provide both ground and aerial filming, but to retain his signature ‘hand-held’, ‘vloggy’ feel.
When Thomas first contacted us, there was only a week until filming was scheduled, and we just managed to get the necessary permissions in on time. And the challenges didn’t stop there. We knew we would only have a short time to capture all the necessary footage, but what we didn’t expect was the record-breaking temperatures on the day of filming.
Climbing mountains in the Lake District in 30°C heat (that’s 86°F, for our friends across the pond), is never something that anyone is prepared for. Nevertheless, we did manage to get all the footage required for the episode by the end of the day.
We can’t wait to see Thomas sweating it out when the episode airs later this month.
